Indoor hockey season is starting, and many SA schools and clubs play it. An indoor stick is thinner and lighter than a field stick, because you can't hit the ball indoors. Here is what the shops have, and how to pick the right length.

How to size an indoor stick

  • Same length as a field stick. Grays SA shows the same height-based size chart on its indoor sticks (for example the DB1i junior indoor stick) as on its field sticks. PassaHockey's indoor guide uses the usual rule: the top of the stick should reach just below the belly button.
  • Shorter is fine for control. Some clubs and guides say indoor sticks are usually shorter, for close control in a small space. If your child is between sizes, pick the shorter one.
  • Lighter and thinner. STX says the indoor rules don't allow a backswing, so indoor sticks are thin and light with a quick toe.
  • Same legal limits. The FIH Rules of Indoor Hockey cap a stick at 737 g and 105 cm, and it must pass through a 51 mm ring.

Our size finder gives the same length for indoor as for field, then shows indoor sticks in that length. Most senior indoor sticks are only made in 36.5" and 37.5".

What to look for

  • Wood or low carbon for beginners. Wooden indoor sticks such as the Adidas Estro .6 give a soft touch. Extra stiffness matters less indoors, where you can't hit.
  • A mid or low bow. Low bows help with lifting and flicks; mid bows are all-round. See bow types.
  • Tape the end. Some indoor clubs require tape on the end of the stick to protect the court. Check with your club.

Questions parents ask

What size indoor hockey stick does my child need?

Use the same length as their field stick. Grays SA shows the same height-based size chart on its indoor sticks as on its field sticks, and PassaHockey gives the same rule: the top of the stick should reach just below the belly button. Some players choose the shorter of two sizes for close control.

Are indoor sticks lighter?

Yes. STX says indoor sticks are made thin and light, because the indoor rules don't allow a backswing, so a field stick is heavier than needed indoors.

Can my child use an indoor stick on the astro?

Not for hitting. Indoor sticks are thin and not built for hard hits, so keep a field stick for outdoor hockey.

Are junior indoor sticks hard to find in SA?

Most indoor sticks in SA shops come in senior lengths (36.5" and 37.5") only. Junior indoor sticks usually start at 32" or 34", so younger children may need to wait for stock or use the nearest length.
